JAL and ANA Double Fuel Surcharges on International Flights

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have decided to nearly double fuel surcharges on international flights for the May–June period.

On routes from Japan to North America and Europe, JAL increased its surcharge from 29,000 yen (approximately $182) to 56,000 yen (around $350). ANA announced a similar adjustment, raising its surcharge from about 31,000 yen (approximately $195) to 56,000 yen.

Originally planned for June, the increase has been brought forward to include May ticketing due to the rapid rise in jet fuel costs.

The airlines stated that the primary driver behind the decision is the sharp increase in aviation fuel prices, particularly linked to developments in the Middle East. According to JAL data, the average price of Singapore jet fuel reached around $147 per barrel during February–March, triggering a shift to higher surcharge brackets.
